Web Hosting Checklist
Here is our web hosting checklist of what you hosting package should contain:
Technical support
Test different companies for technical support by sending out an e-mail with a couple of questions. The quick answer is this a good sign.
Web Hosting Uptime
The longer the uptime, the better. 99% uptime is a minimum. Driver to the company website, you should aim even higher, as low up-time means less sales.
Storage
Should be a minimum of 50 MB so that you can later upgrade. Most hosting providers have 100-200 MB as a minimum.
Bandwidth
This property is often overlooked until you exceed the limit. Sometimes you get a big bill if you exceed bandwidth. Here, it is often better with too much than too little.
FTP access
Infinite access to FTP is essential. You will need an FTP program to upload files. I use even Ace FTP 3 which is also completely free to use.
Control panel
Not all control panels are the same. Some are definitely easier to use than others. Look for a demo of the control panel before you buy hosting. If they do not have any demo, this is usually a bad sign.
Statistics
Many web sites now offer free statistics. The tracking of visitors is important to see which keywords to get hits, and eventually they can not get hits on. If the hosting provider does not offer statistics, you can try the state counter that is free to use. The advantage of this program is that you can also get an invisible version.
CGI BIN
Not strictly necessary, but makes it possible to install scripts and programs. Is usually standard with most hosting providers?
Perl
Makes it possible to run Perl programs. Many good scripts you can get and that are free are written in Perl.
SSL
If you run a company that sells goods over the Internet with credit cards as payment is SSL necessary.
SSI
SSI is a great feature if you frequently update your pages and want to save time. I think particularly at the menu and Text. For example, if you want to change the menu, this one in the template. The menu will be changed on all pages immediately instead of doing this manually on each page.
MySQL
Some programs require a MySQL database to work.
PHP
Very many new programs and scripts also need PHP support.
